‘BearCity’ ready to hibernate

The first “BearCity” was frequently described as a “Sex and the City” with gay men — specifically, the hairy, brawny or heavyset guys known as bears and the men who love and date them. The sequel finds the central couple from the original film, Roger (Gerald McCullouch) and Tyler (Joe Conti), engaged and heading to Provincetown, Mass., with pals, to get married during Bear Week.

The movie’s strengths are its natural, down-to-earth atmosphere and acting, and there are cute scenes, such as one character using a cupcake to demonstrate the fate that may await his boyfriend’s treasured movie project. What director Doug Langway creates is a group of men who appear very true to the time and place, nice (albeit randy) people you’d be happy to see on a vacation to Cape Cod.

But these characters, especially the uninteresting primary couple, can’t sustain almost two hours of movie. Overall, “BearCity 2” deals in mild amusement, not wit.
