New Central Pk. walk/bike paths

Central Park’s roadway is being reconfigured so bicyclists and pedestrians will have less chance of colliding, the Transportation Department announced last night.

The agency said the width of pedestrian pathways would be doubled to 14 feet in the upper loop of the congested park, while the strips reserved for bikers would be increased from 7 to 11 feet. The bike lane would itself be divided between slow pedalers and those zooming along at racing speeds.

The only losers figure to be motorists, who faced the loss of an entire lane and longer drive times during the limited time they’re allowed into the park.

Officials said the changes are similar to those done in Prospect Park in May.
