GOLF: Olazabal stepping aside

Jose Maria Olazabal said being European Ryder Cup captain can be “torture” at times and he ruled out staying on for another two years in the role.

The Spaniard guided Europe to a 14 1/2-13 1/2 victory over the U.S. in a stirring comeback Sunday at Medinah.

Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley are the favorites to replace the popular Olazabal for the 2014 match.

Fred Couples, captain of the U.S. side in the Presidents Cup next year at Muirfield Village, said he has asked Michael Jordan and tournament host Jack Nicklaus to serve as assistant captains.

Jordan served under Davis Love III along with Couples on last weekend’s losing U.S. Ryder Cup team.

NFL: Steelers getting healthy

Coach Mike Tomlin said he expects Rashard Mendenhall, James Harrison and Troy Polamalu to all be in uniform on Sunday when the Steelers host the Eagles.

Harrison hasn’t played this season while nursing a lingering left knee problem. Polamalu missed the last two games with a strained right calf while Mendenhall is at the end of a lengthy rehab after tearing the ACL in his right knee on New Year’s Day.

Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey practiced for the first time since being hospitalized following a helmet-to-helmet hit Sept. 23. Oakland has a bye this week.

SOCCER: Celtic tops Spartak

Georgios Samaras scored in the 90th minute to give Celtic a 3-2 win at 10-man Spartak Moscow in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Two goals by Juan Mata and one each from David Luiz and Ramirez gave defending champion Chelsea a 4-0 win against FC Nordsjaelland.

Robin van Persie scored twice as Manchester United came from behind to win 2-1 at CFR Cluj.

NCAA: McQueary files lawsuit

Mike McQueary, the former Penn State graduate assistant who complained he saw former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky showering with a young boy on campus in 2001, sued the university for what he said is defamation and misrepresentation.

The lawsuit claims McQueary’s treatment by the university since Sandusky’s arrest on child molestation charges has caused him distress, anxiety, humiliation and embarrassment. McQueary, who was fired from his assistant coaching position last fall, seeks millions of dollars in damages.
