Nassau County Legislature officer Peter Schmitt dies of heart attack

Peter Schmitt – the presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature – died this morning after a massive heart attack during a government meeting in Mineola.

The county “has lost a dedicated public serveant,” said Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, with whom Schmitt had been meeting.

Mangano said Schmitt, 62, a Republican from Massapequa, was a friend who had served with him in the legislature since 1996.

“Peter was a loving husband, father, and, most recently, a doting grandfather,” said Mangano. “Nassau County is a better place because of Peter’s leadership, committment and compassion and he will be greatly missed.”
