School bus crashes into Long Island home

A school bus carrying students from a Long Island school crashed into a home across the street from the elementary school today – smashing through the foundation and sending the driver to the hospital, police said.

Syosset Fire Department Assistant Chief Peter Silver said the unidentified driver had just pulled out of the driveway of the St. Edward the Confessor school this afternoon when the man “apparently lost consciousness and drove right into the home through the foundation.”

Silver said there were five kids, ages five through eight on the bus but they were not injured in the accident, which lifted the bus “three feet off the ground.”

He said the impact was in the garage area and local officials were examining the site to determine if the building remained structurally sound.

Homeowner Dan Percell said neither he, nor his wife or two daughters were home at the time of the accident but two of their dogs were. “The eldest was a little shaken up but they’re okay,” said Percell. The driver was being evaluated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, sources said.
