NBA: Grizzlies executive found dead in home

Dana Davis, vice president of basketball operations for the Grizzlies, has been found dead in his apartment. He was 56.

The Grizzlies confirmed Davis’ death in a statement last night without elaborating. The Commercial Appeal reported Davis had not been heard from since Tuesday, prompting team personnel to enter his apartment yesterday with officers from the Memphis Police Department where they found Davis.

NCAA: Hofstra basketball suspends a pair


Taran Buie and Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, who transferred to Hofstra for the upcoming basketball season, were suspended by third-year head coach Mo Cassara for two exhibition games and the first two regular-season contests for violating teams rules.

Both had issues at their previous stops, as Coombs-McDaniel was arrested for marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia while at UConn, and Buie was suspended for breaking team rules while at Penn State. He was later given misdemeanor charges of theft, criminal mischief and receiving stolen property. — Zach Braziller

ETC.: Cyclist Landis guilty of defamation

The International Cycling Union said a Swiss court ruling has prohibited Floyd Landis from repeating claims that UCI leaders corruptly protected Lance Armstrong from a doping case.

In a Sept. 26 ruling on the defamation case published yesterday by the UCI, Landis is ordered to pay UCI President Pat McQuaid and predecessor Hein Verbruggen $10,667 each, plus legal costs totaling $4,900. Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title for doping, was sued in the district court after telling a German television station in November 2010 that the UCI protected some star riders from doping claims.

A’s relief pitcher Pat Neshek posted on his Twitter account that he and his wife lost their newborn child 23 hours after his birth “with no explanation.” Neshek had been away from the club for the final two games for the baby’s birth.

Titans coach Mike Munchak said Matt Hasselbeck will start at quarterback in place of Jake Locker (sore shoulder) in Sunday’s NFL game at Minnesota.
