The Department of Education has narrowed its list of elementary and middle schools facing potential closure or overhauls to 36, officials said yesterday.
That represents just a fraction of the 217 schools that performed poorly enough on city-issued report cards to be flagged for possible interventions.
The schools include 10 that received F’s this week, 18 that got D’s and eight that scored C’s.
Of the eight C schools, seven have gotten that grade for three straight years — including IS 59 in Queens and PS 6 in The Bronx— which makes them eligible for closure under city criteria. Schools also qualify with a single D or F.
Half the schools had been flagged by the state Education Department in late August as among the worst 5 percent in New York. Two of them are charter schools in The Bronx.
City DOE officials plan to hold meetings at the schools before deciding on what action to take.
