$25M for historic mansion

The historic Rothschild mansion is being sold for $25 million — and the buyers are restoring it to its former glory as a single-family estate.

The deal is in contract and is expected to close in the next few weeks, a source said.

The six-story town house on East 70th Street between Park and Madison avenues is 11,256 square feet, is extra wide at 28 feet, and is famed for its garden filled with ginko trees.

All six stories look out onto landscaped backyards that were once shared by seven families on East 70th and 71st streets — “a concept of rare civility in New York,” according to the listing.

Inside, there’s a curved, grand staircase topped by a skylight, though it is currently covered up, and a sixth-floor terrace with views of the Four Seasons Hotel.

The mansion was built in 1929 for Walter Rothschild, a founder of Federated Department Stores. It has been on the market since 2004 and Woody Allen once considered buying it.

The contract was signed “ages” ago, a source said, but the deal was held up until the nonprofit owner, the Century Foundation, a US policy-oriented think tank, found new digs downtown in which to move. The move will soon take place.

Although $25 million sounds steep, some might consider it a bargain — some apartments in the area are selling for $50 million a pop.

The mansion requires a full-on renovation, sources say.
