Vid bid on Village landmark

Actor John Leguizamo is putting the heat on Mayor Bloomberg to landmark 25 blocks of the South Village, which stretches from Washington Square Park to Watts Street and from Sixth Avenue to La Guardia Place.

“As a young artist, this is the place that I would come to, because you knew this was where it all started,” the comedian says in the “Save the South Village” video.

The video is set for release tomorrow by the Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation.

“What’s very unfortunate is that the South Village has lost many iconic buildings that were important cultural institutions,” he said.

In 2010, the city designated 11 blocks of the village, encompassing 235 buildings, as an official historic district.

But recent expansion plans for New York University have residents worried that the majority of the historic neighborhood will be lost for good.
