A homeless man has been charged with raping a woman who took a late-night nap on a bench in Tompkins Square Park, police said yesterday.
Ruben Canales, 27, is accused of raping a 31-year-old woman at about 11:30 p.m. Friday.
The woman fought him off, and ran to the Kamaran Deli nearby on Avenue A, said sources.
When Canales followed her into the store, workers called 911. Canales has several recent arrests on his record, including marijuana sales, criminal mischief, and criminal possession of stolen property, the sources said.
