Foxconn fire

Foxconn Technology Group, the assembler of Apple iPhones, had to stop production for the second time in as many weeks amid worker protests. Foxconn employs more than 1 million workers in China and has suffered in the past three years from suicides, riots and strikes. To improve working conditions, the company raised pay and allowed inspections by outside observers. The employees, who work up to 12 hours a day, say abuse from guards and the difficulties of meeting Apple’s demands for quality set off the latest incidents.

Gas relief

Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown told state regulators to immediately allow oil refineries to make an early transition to winter-blend gasoline to help bring record prices at the pump under control. Regular gasoline in California retailed at an average $4.655 a gallon yesterday.

Merkel pickle

Greek protesters are gearing up for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s first visit to Athens since the financial crisis began with plans for strikes, rallies and a petition demanding reparations from the Nazi occupation.
