Quinn to eBay: ‘Key’p us safe

Christine Quinn wants eBay to lock up its loopholes.

The City Council speaker and likely mayoral contender sent the online auction site a letter demanding it tighten the loose regulations that allowed master FDNY keys — which control elevators and traffic lights — to be sold on the site for a paltry $150.

“We are writing to request that you immediately review your security measures and close all existing loopholes that allowed official New York City keys to be sold on eBay, creating a danger to New Yorkers,” Quinn (D-Manhattan) and Public Safety Committee Chairman Peter Vallone (D-Queens) wrote to eBay president John Donahoe.

“The sale of such items could be disruptive and harmful to our city,” Quinn wrote about the loophole, which The Post first exposed.

“While you have a stated policy that appears as though it should have prohibited the sale of this item, we are concerned that your screening measures did not adequately detect and prevent this transaction.”

She cited the company’s written policy barring sale of “most government, mass transit and shipping-related items, including uniforms and internal documents.”Still, she said, enforcement needs to be strengthened.
