Doctors remove bullet from 14-year-old Pakistani girl targeted by Taliban

Surgeons removed a bullet from a courageous 14-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by a would-be assassin from the Taliban in a crime that shocked the world.

Malala Yousafzai, who became an international symbol of resistance to terrorist cruelty, underwent a delicate, three-hour operation, officials said.

Pakistani doctors said she remained in critical condition and her outlook was uncertain because she may have suffered brain damage from the attack in her town of Mingora in the dangerous Swat Valley on Tuesday.

Several Pakistani schools shut their doors yesterday to protest the targeting of Malala, who had campaigned to reopen girls’ schools after they were ordered shut by the Taliban.

The Taliban made no secret of its responsibility, saying its gunman targeted Malala because of her “obscenity” in trying to allow girls to attend school and because of her pro-West attitudes.
