Driver-slay cop wants to testify

The NYPD detective who fatally shot an unarmed Army National Guardsman during a Queens traffic stop is “extremely anxious” to testify before a possible grand jury, his lawyer said yesterday.

Hassan Hamdy’s willingness to testify before a panel that would decide whether to charge him in Noel Polanco’s death came to light after Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, “It will require what I believe to be a grand-jury investigation to determine precisely what happened there.”

Hamdy’s lawyer, Philip Karasyk, said his client was “extremely anxious to testify before the panel to give his version of the events.”

Hamdy, 39, shot Polanco, 22, after the young man was pulled over last Thursday for allegedly speeding and driving erratically on the Grand Central Parkway.

Sources claim Hamdy feared for his life when Polanco reached toward the floor — but a woman in the front seat said Polanco never took his hands off the steering wheel.

“Our investigation is continuing. At the conclusion of the investigation we will determine whether to present the matter to a grand jury,” said Queens DA Richard Brown.
