A senior at Stuyvesant HS says a lifetime of hard work is in jeopardy after being falsely accused in the cheating scandal there.
In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, “Student Doe” says he/she was unfairly suspended as a result of the rampant cheating during Regents’ exams – and now the student’s college future is in doubt.
The petition says the student’s suspension will be automatically reported to prospective colleges – and that Stuyvesant’s voiding of the student’s Regents scores will be a black mark as well.
That’s because students can’t take makeup tests until January – after the deadline for early admissions, and some regular admissions, said the student’s lawyer, Michael Rakower.
“If this problem is not remedied before the end of this month, it will likely doom my client’s chances of gaining early admission to the college of my client’s choice,” Rakower said.
The petition says that Doe was one of the students who was texted answers by another student named Nayeem Ahsan during the physics exam, but the student’s phone was off at the time. When Doe later saw the texts, the student texted Ahsan back and told him to stop, the filing says.
Doe never saw any other texts, the filing says. The DOE told Doe’s family the student sent texts during the history exam, which Doe vehemently denies.
Rakower said they refused to show the family any evidence, and denied his client a hearing where they could rebut the charges.
A spokeswoman for the city Law Department said the DOE “acted appropriately,” but declined further comment.
