Corrupt cop gets 3 years for gun smuggling

A corrupt, active-duty cop who helped steal a truckload of cigarettes and smuggle guns into New York City was sentenced today to three years in the slammer.

Eddie Goris made $30,000 as a “core” member of the crew that veteran NYPD cop William Masso put together after getting lured into an FBI sting operation, prosecutor Carrie Cohen said in court.

Manhattan federal Judge Barbara Jones told Goris that she understood how “lots of people” turned to crime “in order to make a quick buck.”

”But this is the type of case that requires a substantial period of incarceration to show how serious it is,” added Jones, who also ordered Goris to forfeit all of his ill-gotten gains.

Another member of Masso’s crew, NYPD retiree Richard Melnik, got 21 months behind bars yesterday for his role in the scheme, which didn’t include transporting the guns, which the feds had rendered inoperable.

Meanwhile, court papers filed today show that Masso — who was sentenced to 4 3/4 years — was given until Nov. 19 to report to prison because he has a Nov. 16 appointment to be evaluated as part of a medical study of Sept. 11 responders.

Masso says he spent at total of 96 hours at Ground Zero and in Lower Manhattan on Sept. 11 and on seven days after.

He told the World Trade Center Health Program that he would be “leaving to go away for three years” on Oct. 10, but couldn’t get an appointment before then.
