Paul & Dave unsplit

Never mind.

Late Show” bandleader Paul Shaffer yesterday said he’d been quoted out of context when the Canadian edition of TV Guide reported that he was thinking of leaving David Letterman after 30 years.

“In an interview with a reporter, I made two unrelated points which, joined together, seem to say something that isn’t true,” he said in a prepared statement last night.

“It’s true that the show was recently extended for two years, and yes, someday when it’s all over, I will most likely take a nap.

“But I hope that day never comes. As long as the show goes on, I will be there for as long as Dave wants me on it.”

Shaffer set off a storm of concern yesterday when he was quoted as saying that he may not re-sign with the late-night show when his current contract is up in 2014.
