KEY MOMENT

Derek Jeter left the game in the top of the 12th when his left leg buckled as he tried to field Jhonny Peralta’s ground ball. Jeter had to be helped off the field by Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue. He was diagnosed with a fractured left ankle, an injury that carries with it a three-month recovery time.

HERO

Delmon Young, who had homered earlier, sent a liner to right, driving in Miguel Cabrera with the winning run in the 12th inning off David Phelps. That hit saved the Tigers from an awful defeat after closer Jose Valverde blew a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth.

ZERO

Nick Swisher brought his horrendous postseason play to the outfield when he stabbed awkwardly at Young’s liner after losing it in the lights. He didn’t even touch the ball, allowing it to fall and roll to the wall for an RBI double. Then things collapsed for the Yankees.
