MLB: Reds give extension to Baker

The Reds gave Dusty Baker a two-year contract extension yesterday after the 63-year-old manager led them to 97 wins this season and the NL playoffs twice in the past three years. Baker missed the Reds’ NL Central title celebration this year because he was hospitalized with an irregular heartbeat and a mini-stroke. Baker is one of only six managers to win division titles with three teams, along with Billy Martin, Joe Torre, Tony La Russa, Lou Piniella and Davey Johnson.

The Red Sox said they are keeping ticket prices unchanged for 2013 after their worst season in nearly 50 years. Individual prices range from $12 for the upper bleachers to $165 for a seat above the Green Monster in left field.

The Phillies hired Wally Joyner to be their assistant hitting coach. He will assist new hitting coach Steve Henderson.

GOLF: Mickelson misses on charity shot

Phil Mickelson overshot the big money targets on his 100-yard shot at halftime of last night’s Broncos-Chargers game in San Diego. He still raised $50,000 for First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides new books for needy children. Had he hit one of the concentric rings in the middle of the green in the “KPMG Chip4Charity” promotion, Mickelson could have raised anywhere from $100,000 to $1 million for the charity.

NBA: Bynum’s knee gets injection

Andrew Bynum received another injection on his injured right knee. The 76ers center was given an injection of Synvisc — a gel-like substance that sometimes provides relief for inflamed tissue. The natural substance is designed to lubricate and cushion the joint. The Sixers expect him to ready for the Oct. 31 season opener.

Reggie Theus was hired by the Lakers as coach of their D-league team.

SOCCER: U.S.-Guatemala a key Cup qualifier

The U.S. national soccer team merely needs a draw with Guatemala tonight in Kansas City for both teams to advance from Group A in the semifinals of World Cup qualifying. A result one way or the other would give Jamaica an outside chance of squeaking through to the final round. “Our approach to the game is clear. We want to win this game,’’ said U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
