Schumer zaps feds

Sen. Charles Schumer is fighting an electric shock.

Yesterday, he demanded that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission allow more competition from low-air-emissions power plants in the state — saying such a move would spare New Yorkers from a potential rate hike next year.

“We should be unfurling the welcome mat if a new power producer wants to provide affordable electricity to New York residents, not throwing up obstacles in their way, as [the federal government] has done with its unsound decision,” Schumer said yesterday.

He was referring to FERC’s decision to ban new plants from bidding at power auctions after execs at older plants said they would offer artificially low rates.

The Post reported this month that Con Ed customers in the city will see a $9 monthly increase in their bills beginning in January.
