US Army Corps of Engineers to assist in clearing Brooklyn Battery Tunnel

The US Army Corps of Engineers will help pump out of the heavily-damaged Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, which had 86 million gallons of water inside during the height of Hurricane Sandy, officials said.

Gov. Cuomo and MTA Chairman toured the flooded crossing this afternoon in this dramatic video which shows the gallons of sea water that breached the Lower Manhattan facility.

Photos of their visit are posted on the MTA’s Flickr.

No opening date has been set for the tunnel.

The Queens Midtown Tunnel also remains closed, but it was not as badly damaged as the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

Lhota said he is optimistic that the army engineers can help bring the waters down at the Brooklyn Battery.

“They look at problems like this and they get excited, that makes me feel really good that they want to help,” he said.
