Weather ‘rains’ supreme

Every cloud has a silver lining — especially for the Weather Channel.

The cable network’s wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Sandy set new records as people tuned in for constant updates.

The Weather Channel had the highest reach of any cable channel on Sunday, attracting as many as 39 million people to get breaking news on the devastating storm.

Total viewers for the network hit 1.4 million, making it the top-rated non-kids network for the day, according to Nielsen figures.

In total day ratings, which measure both daytime and primetime viewing, the Weather Channel topped all rival news networks.

The Weather Channel’s website also notched close to a half-billion page views, more than double the 183 million during last year’s Hurricane Irene.

The Weather Channel, owned by Bain, Blackstone and Comcast’s NBC Universal division, is hoping for a turnaround under new CEO David Kenney. The parent company recently renamed itself The Weather Co. to reflect its growing emphasis on mobile and digital platforms.
