City’s public schools closed the rest of the week

City public schools will remain closed Thursday and Friday — and will reopen Monday, Mayor Bloomberg announced this afternoon.

That means schools will have been closed for a full week as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Bloomberg said school personnel will report back to work Friday in order to get buildings and classrooms back in shape before students return.

“There’s an awful lot of schools that have received damage or don’t have power,” he said. “Hopefully by Monday everything will be back perfect.”

School Chancellor Walcott said a whopping 200 school buildings — out of about 1,250 — were “impacted” by Hurricane Sandy, some with minor and others with major damage.

There were reports on Twitter of buildings that were flooded, others with entrances blocked by downed tree limbs, and at least one school that was damaged by fire.

Also, school bus officials said yesterday that up to 30 percent of the yellow school bus fleet of the major carriers had been flooded in low-lying areas of Coney Island, Staten Island and the Rockaways.

They said the engines were being dried out and buses cleaned of mud and debris.

They also cautioned that fuel storage tanks in some areas had been breached by seawater — so that refueling all the buses by Monday could prove challenging.
