City shutters bus service below 23rd St. due to darkness

So much for the city buses.

The MTA has stopped all bus service below 23rd Street tonight because it’s too dangerous to run vehicles in areas without street lights, dumping thousands of passengers onto the darkened streets.

“There are thousands of people wandering around 23rd Street right now trying to continue their ride downtown,” said one passenger who was on the M20 bus headed to Lower Manhattan.

Transit officials said that it was impossible for bus operators to drive safely in the area, which has been without power since Monday.

“There are no traffic lights or traffic agents and the streets are filled with people,” said MTA spokesman Charles Seaton.

“It’s dangerous.”
