Fencing the loot

Two smugglers from Mexico got were left high and dry when their SUV got stuck atop the 14-foot border fence as they tried to sneak into the US.

They were using a new advance in smuggling technology — a portable truck ramp that they installed on the International Boundary fence about 20 miles from Yuma, Ariz.

It worked — halfway. Their silver Jeep Cherokee got to the top of the fence, but no further.

When Border Patrol agents spotted it after midnight Tuesday, the two men inside fled back into Mexico, leaving their vehicle behind.

It’s not clear whether they were smuggling drugs, guns or other contraband in the SUV because they emptied it out before fleeing, the Border Patrol said.

In April of last year, drug smugglers in another Cherokee did succeed in scaling the fence near Yuma using a similar, handmade portable ramp.

After a high-speed chase, they abandoned the SUV on the US side — along with 1,000 pounds of marijuana.,
