Groups cancel & assist

The New York Marathon’s organizers finally called off their ill-timed footrace — but it didn’t take 26.2 hours of outrage for other major organizations to do the right thing.

Early yesterday, the Central Park Conservancy said it canceled its annual fall fund-raiser, “Autumn in Central Park,” which was set for next Thursday. The group decided to pitch in and help the city in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

“We believe our resources are better utilized continuing to restore Central Park and assisting with emergency response citywide,” a spokeswoman said in a statement. “We plan to make staff available whenever possible and at the city’s request to help with hurricane cleanup . . . beyond Central Park.”

The New York Public Library said it canceled a gala event that had been scheduled for Monday.

“Further, with so many New Yorkers in need right now, we are also exploring how to put the food from our gala to good use,” library president Anthony W. Marx wrote in a letter to supporters.
