Syria crosses into DMZ

Three Syrian tanks allegedly entered the Golan Heights’ demilitarized zone yesterday — for the first time in nearly 40 years.

Israel announced that it immediately raised its alert level in the Northern Command area and officially complained to UN peacekeepers on hand.

The tanks apparently were facing off against Syrian rebels, according to the online news site Ynet, which said the armored personnel carriers crossed into the DMZ just a few miles from Israeli military posts.

Several mortar shells from the unrest Syria have reportedly fallen in that area within recent days.

The DMZ, about 3 1/2 miles at its widest, was created after an Israeli-Syrian border war. Crossing it would violate a 1974 agreement.
