COLLEGE: McCombs, UConn top Pitt

In East Hartford, Conn., Lyle McCombs ran for 120 yards and a touchdown and Connecticut beat Pittsburgh 24-17 last night for the Huskies’ first conference win after four losses.

Chandler Whitmer threw for 213 yards and a score for the Huskies (4-6, 1-4 Big East), and Nick Williams returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown.

Federal authorities dropped their investigation into sexual abuse claims that cost a Syracuse assistant basketball coach his job, threw a top-ranked team into turmoil and threatened the career of Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim.

After a probe spanning nearly a year, U.S. Attorney Richard Hartunian said there was not enough evidence to support claims Bernie Fine had molested a boy in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room.

NFL: Steelers WR fines for faking injury

The NFL levied $50,000 in fines to the Steelers and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (Sanders was fined $15,000 and the organization $35,000) for faking an injury during an Oct. 21 game in Cincinnati.

Sanders grabbed the back of his leg and fell to the ground during the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh’s 24-17 win. Sanders sat out one play and returned to the game for punt coverage.

The Ravens received a surprise visit from injured star linebacker Ray Lewis, who said he’s preparing to come back later this season as long as the team makes the playoffs.

ETC.: Lolo wins silver medal in bobsled debut

Star U.S. Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones teamed with driver Jazmine Fenlator to win silver in her bobsled debut in the World Cup opener at Lake Placid. Tianna Madison, another track Olympian, and Elana Meyers won bronze, 0.01 seconds behind. “I’m kind of in shock,” Jones said.

In Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Charlie Beljan was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to the hospital after shooting an 8-under 64 for a three-shot lead in the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic at Disney.

In Guadalajara, Mexico, Angela Stanford shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Inbee Park at 11-under after the second round of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

In London, top-ranked Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Andy Murray won their final group matches at the ATP finals, sending both into tomorrow’s semifinals.
