Buying votes

When I saw the final figure for 2012 campaign expenditures of $6 billion, or over $45 per voter, I wanted to return to simpler times when a vote was bought by the local ward boss for a beer and a sandwich, with the outcome known (“About That $6 Billion Campaign Bill,” Charles C. W. Cooke, PostOpinion, Nov. 8).

For the media, the $6 billion spent was a blessing; for the voting public, a disgrace.

RIP, Roger Wood

I worked under Roger Wood during his entire tenure at The Post (“Roger Wood Dead; Led Post Resurgence,” Steve Cuozzo, PostOpinion, Nov. 3).

He was a marvelous editor and a nice guy. He’ll be missed.

Remember Libya?

Now that President Obama has won a second term, I’m calling upon congressional Republicans to issue articles of impeachment against him regarding the scandal in Libya, in which it’s clear that four Americans were sacrificed on the altar of political expediency (“Bam’s Benghazi Lies,” Ralph Peters, PostOpinion, Nov. 4).

Unlike the unsubstantiated “Bush lied” scandal of the last decade, we have indisputable proof and eyewitness testimony that the president was negligent in his duty to protect Americans, and then lied about it for weeks.

How can anyone trust this man who now has the “flexibility” to sell out American interests or lives?

Are Republicans going to let Obama get away with dereliction of duty, followed by a Watergate-like cover-up?

With the media in Obama’s pocket and the election behind us, it’s time the president answers for this. If not, who knows how much damage his new-found “flexibility” will bring to America?

American do-over

The beauty of democracy is that it allows the people to make choices, even wrong choices, even twice (“Barack 4 More,” Nov. 7).

Shooter’s digs

Our society finds approximately 1 million abortions per year — many of which are for convenience or financial purposes — acceptable. But when it comes to Jared Loughner, who was found guilty of multiple murders and the shooting of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, we cannot muster the courage to end his life (“Gabby’s True Grit, Nov. 9).

Although we have determined that his life no longer serves any societal purpose, we will set him up in taxpayer-provided surroundings for the next 40 to 50 years.

Maybe I’m not progressive enough, but I don’t understand.

NYC’s strongest

That which doesn’t kill us will indeed make us stronger (“God Hates Us,” Nov. 8).

No sir, God doesn’t hate New York.

Perhaps he just had some extra snow, gusty winds and freezing temperatures that needed to be placed somewhere, and simply knew that New Yorkers could handle the tumultuous weather better than anyone else.

If anything, I think God is absolutely mesmerized and awed by the resiliency and chutzpah of New Yorkers — as are the rest of us.
