MLB: Davey, Melvin top managers

Davey Johnson of the Nationals and Bob Melvin of the Athletics were chosen as managers of the year yesterday after guiding their teams to huge turnaround seasons. Melvin beat out Baltimore’s Buck Showalter for the AL honor in a close vote by a Baseball Writers’ Association of America panel. Under Johnson, the Nationals posted the best record in the majors.

NFL: Shoulder to sideline Big Ben

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin called Pittsburgh’s franchise quarterback “questionable” but otherwise offered little detail yesterday, less than 24 hours after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was pounded into the ground by Chiefs linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston during Pittsburgh’s 16-13 OT win.

A grand jury in Houston dismissed a misdemeanor resisting arrest charge against Adrian Peterson after hearing from the Vikings running back and other witnesses.

BLOTTER: Solo’s fiance arrested

Former Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens was arrested in Seattle on suspicion of assaulting Hope Solo, the goaltender for the U.S. women’s soccer team. The two were set to get married yesterday and argued Monday over whether to live in Washington or Florida after their marriage, court documents said. Stevens was not charged. There was no word if the wedding actually took place.

COLLEGE: Duke holds off Kentucky

Curry scored 23 points as No. 9 Duke (1-1) held off No. 3 Kentucky, 75-68 in Atlanta. … Keith Appling scored 19 points as No. 21 Michigan State (1-1) scored a 67-64 upset of No. 7 Kansas (1-1). … Tim Hardaway Jr. had 17 points as No. 5 Michigan (3-0) advanced to the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off with a 77-47 victory over Cleveland State (2-1). … Shabazz Napier had 13 points as No. 23 UConn (2-0) beat Vermont, 67-49.

Fordham, despite 21 points by Branden Frazier, fell to 0-3 in a 74-58 loss to Robert Morris (1-2) in Pittsburgh.Mark Cisco led Columbia (2-0) with 13 points in a 74-40 win over Division III Haverford.

NBA: Cancer takes Williamson

Grizzlies assistant GM Kenny Williamson, a Harlem native who was deeply involved in the Rucker League, died of cancer. He was 65. Williamson, known as Eggman, worked as a scout for the Knicks from 1997-2003 and had been an assistant coach at St. John’s, Seton Hall and Columbia.

The Bobcats acquired forward Hakim Warrick from the Hornets for guard Matt Carroll. … Ramon Sessions scored 21 points as the Bobcats (3-3) beat the winless Wizards 92-76 to win back-to-back games for the first time since last December.

ETC.: Pittsford lands LPGA tourney

The LPGA Championship will be held June 6-9 in Pittsford, N.Y., giving the Rochester area two major golf tournaments. The PGA Championship will be played at Oak Hill Country Club in August.

Jason Day beat Stacy Lewis with birdie on the second hole of a playoff to lift the PGA Tour past the LPGA Tour in the Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge in Henderson, Nev. The Champions Tour trio of Bernhard Langer, Fred Funk and Tom Lehman finished six strokes back.

A Brazilian hospital said soccer great Pele is in good condition after hip surgery.
