Jets waive Maybin

No more Mayhem.

The Jets waived disappointing linebacker Aaron Maybin Tuesday as they search for answers on how to turn their 3-6 season around. Maybin, a pass-rush specialist, had no sacks this season.

Maybin led the Jets with six sacks in 2011 after they picked him off the scrap heap. The 11th overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Bills had appeared to revive his career.

The Jets signed Maybin to a one-year, $1.015 million deal in the offseason, giving him a $325,000 signing bonus and a $75,000 roster bonus.

He entered training camp with high hopes of expanding his role from situational pass rusher to every-down linebacker. He added weight in an effort to play better against the run and showed promise in camp with spirited practices.

But when the regular season arrived, he disappeared.

Maybin played just 119 defensive snaps. He had one tackle and nine quarterback hits. The first sign of trouble for Maybin came Sunday when he was inactive for the team’s 28-7 loss to the Seahawks.

The Jets have struggled to mount a consistent pass rush under coach Rex Ryan. They have 16 sacks this season after recording four on Sunday. The Jets have signed linebackers Marcus Dowtin and Ricky Sapp over the past few weeks. Either could be a replacement for Maybin as the team’s designated pass rusher.

* In an effort to gain depth at running back, the Jets signed Kahlil Bell Tuesday after he worked out for the team.

Bell has played 22 games for the Bears. He was waived by the team on Oct. 15.

The team’s depth at running back has been thinned by injuries. Joe McKnight is dealing with a high left ankle sprain that kept him out of last week’s game in Seattle. Bilal Powell then suffered a concussion against the Seahawks.

The Jets are unsure whether either player will be available for this week’s game with the Rams.

The Jets also worked out running back Steve Slaton.

* The Jets placed CB Isaiah Trufant on season-ending injured reserve with a left knee injury, suffered on his first play Sunday in Seattle. Trufant had gained a larger role in recent weeks as a nickel cornerback. The move leaves the Jets with one open roster spot.
