True to his word, Torii Hunter was “quick” to end the free-agent process.
The 37-year-old outfielder signed a two-year deal worth $26 million with the Tigers on Wednesday, according to FoxSports.com. The Yankees had expressed interest in signing the veteran, but were not expected to make a multi-year offer which made them a long shot throughout the brief process. Instead, Hunter will join the team that swept the Yankees out of the ALCS.
Hunter, who batted .313 with 16 home runs and 92 RBIs last season for the Angels, will join a dangerous Detroit lineup that includes Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Austin Jackson and Victor Martinez, if the DH returns successfully from knee surgery.
“This is going to be quick,” Hunter told MLB Network of the free-agent process on Monday.
The Yankees are looking to sign another outfielder with Nick Swisher seeking a long-term deal that he likely won’t get from them.
