Multiple accidents snarl Lincoln Tunnel commute, dozens injured

Two separate bus accidents — plus a later eight-car pileup — at the Lincoln Tunnel made a mess of today’s commute into Manhattan.

First, at around 7:15 a.m., a NJ Transit bus carrying 45 passengers was rear-ended by a Martz Trailways bus, said NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder.

The NJ Transit bus was headed from Paramus to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Times Square. Twenty people were reportedly injured.

Then at 9 a.m., another NJ Transit bus was rear-ended, this time by a truck, Snyder added.

The bus had originated in Secaucus and was also bound for the bus terminal. There were 70 people on board, five of whom reported injuries, Snyder said.

The uninjured riders were loaded onto another bus, she added.

More than two hours of delays resulted from the crashes, officials reported.

To make matters worse, a few hours later, there was eight-vehicle fender-bender in the westbound tube heading to New Jersey, authorities said.

The tube was shut down for investigation and cleanup, and traffic heading to New Jersey was advised to use the Holland Tunnel.

Just before 2 p.m., NJ Transit was still reporting delays between 60 and 90 minutes.
