Beljan wins first PGA Tour event, now really hoping he can play with ‘Mr. Tiger Woods’

If Charlie Beljan can hardly handle the last event of the PGA Tour season, how does he think he’ll handle playing with the most famous golfer of the past half century?

Beljan won the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic at Disney on Sunday, his first tour win, two days after he had what he called “a major panic attack” and was forced to spend the night in the hospital.

The victory got him within the top 125 on the money list, giving him full playing privileges next season, and now he has another goal.

“Hopefully this will put me in the position, (since I’m) still looking for my No. 1 thing since I got out here and that’s to play with Mr. Tiger Woods,” Beljan told reporters in Orlando. “So maybe now he’ll consider me on a practice round or something.”

The long-hitting 28-year-old shot a Friday 64 while having to take breaks to lay down and catch his breath, and after signing his scorecard was escorted from the course on a stretcher. Because of a battery of tests that all came back negative, Beljan said he wasn’t able to take his golf shoes off until 4:30 a.m. On one hour of sleep he came to the course and shot a 1-under 71, followed by a Sunday 69 to give him a two-shot win.

Beljan admitted to a history with panic attacks, but it hasn’t quelled his confidence.

“I got out here to play with the best players in the world, and now I am one of the best players in the world, I think,” he said. “I don’t know if anybody else thinks it, but that doesn’t really matter. As long as I think it, that’s all that matters.”

Beljan also had a little dust-up in August when he made some controversial remarks about President Obama on Twitter.

On Aug. 11, he posted, “Praying that Paul and Romney can beat the biggest D Bag this country has ever seen. Holllllllla #Romney2012.” That was followed by a response from a person who said he had met him earlier in the year at the Travelers Championship and was a fan until the political tweets.

Beljan then went after the man’s apparent affiliation with Penn State, saying, “I don’t think anyone working for penn st should be passing judgment on anyone.” He followed that with, “PSU IS what is wrong with this country. Care about winning more than boys being molested by your admin. solid.”

Beljan’s twitter account was deleted soon thereafter.
