Hostess’ reprieve in Philly

The Philadelphia Hostess plant that supplies New York City is running again after a strike by the bakers’ union temporarily halted production.

Hostess pulled in management from other areas to restart the plant, which came to a halt when workers refused to cross a picket line, according to a source.

The plant supplied drivers with about half their typical Wonder Bread deliveries, while the amount of snacks supplied dropped by 10 percent, according to a New York driver, adding, “The next few days will probably decide the fate of the company.”

Last month, bankrupt Hostess won court approval to impose an 8 percent pay cut. The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union opposed the move and threatened to strike.

The company said in a memo that workers at 23 of its 36 plants had walked off the job, but enough staff crossed the picket lines at about half the striking plants to continue production.

Hostess also said it would permanently close three bakeries, based in Seattle, St. Louis and Cincinnati, as a result of the strike.
