Responding to rockets: Israel had no choice

The Issue: Israel’s military response to rockets fired at its southern cities by Hamas from the Gaza strip.

Hamas will stop at nothing to destroy Israel (“Israel Strikes Back,” Editorial, Nov. 16).

They do not even care if they put their own people in harm’s way to achieve their goal.

If Canada or Mexico fired rockets into the United States, no one would question our government’s right to protect our citizens.

Why is Israel always labeled the aggressor for defending its citizens and its right to exist?

After much restraint on the part of Israel, the Defense Ministry has taken much-needed action against Hamas. Even the Security Council should understand that Israel cannot exist under the constant barrage of rockets from Gaza.

The Palestinians cannot wage an undeclared war against Israel without a response.

Ban Ki-Moon, secretary general of the United Nations, has made us ashamed of the UN. He persists in asking Israel to show restraint, but he should have called a meeting of the Security Council and stated that Israel must be supported in stopping hostile actions against it.

We have reached the point in our struggle for our very existence that we must take into account the anti-Israel hostility of practically all nations of the world.

We are right in doing something drastic about the need to defend our own people.

Other than trying to give the Palestinians more authority in the General Assembly, where is the UN regarding the current situation in Israel? It’s quiet, as its members desperately look for ways to blame the Jewish state for what is currently going on in the region.

The UN puts the world in further danger by not condemning Hamas, Hezbollah and other lunatic organizations.
