NYC high school basketball coach of the year removed from his position

A Coach of the Year at a Catholic high school in Flushing was booted from his position as boys basketball coach and put on administrative leave, sources say.

Holy Cross HS has yet to announce why Paul Gilvary, varsity head coach of the Knights basketball team and the school’s director of admissions, has been removed.

Gilvary has been a coach at Holy Cross for 16 years and is heavily involved with the Catholic High School Athletic Association, where he’s chairman of the boys soccer league and boys basketball league.

He’s also the assignor for umpires in baseball.

Assistant coach Lloyd Desvigne told The Post that Gilvary has been out since Nov. 10, when he was missing from practice.

“Everybody is very, very frustrated and stunned,” said Desvigne, who ran a scrimmage Wednesday against Wings Academy in Gilvary’s place.

“Nobody knows what’s going on. There’s been no official word but administrative leave.”

On Saturday afternoon, relatives visited Gilvary’s house in Bayside, Queens, but wouldn’t comment.

Multiple parents told The Post that Gilvary, who’s a Holy Cross graduate, has not been with the team since last Friday.

Tommy Marchesini has been named varsity head coach, sources said.

Reached by phone on Saturday, Marchesini said, “I don’t know what’s happening right now. As of right now, I’m just the freshman coach.”

Gilvary has won one CHSAA city championship at Holy Cross and is the reigning New York Post All-Queens boys basketball Coach of the Year.
