Egypt train-bus smash kills 49

A speeding train slammed into a school bus in central Egypt yesterday, killing at least 49 and prompting a wave of anger against the government in Cairo.

Over 50 children between 4 and 6 years old were on their way to kindergarten class when the train struck, a security official said, adding that it appeared the railroad crossing was not closed.

A witness said the train pushed the doomed bus along the tracks for nearly half a mile.

Books, school bags and children’s socks were strewn along the tracks near the blood-stained, mangled bus near al-Mandara village in the central Assiut province.
