Greece fired up

Thousands of Greeks marched in Athens yesterday in the annual demonstration commemorating the violent suppression of a 1973 student uprising against a US-backed junta.

Student associations, members of the main opposition party, the radical-left Syriza, and other leftist groups were among those who took part in the march that started off from the Athens Polytechnic, home to the uprising almost four decades ago.

As always, the bloodstained Greek flag that flew over the university on the night of Nov. 17, 1973, was carried at the head of the demonstration.
