Carter-Williams in ’Cuse control

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim paid Orange point guard Michael Carter-Williams the ultimate compliment after the dynamic sophomore added another splendid game to his budding college career.

“He’s playing the position as well as you can play it,” Boeheim said. “Good decisions.”

Carter-Williams had eight points and a career-high 13 assists with only one turnover, James Southerland scored 18 points, and host No. 6 Syracuse beat Colgate 87-51 yesterday.

Carter-Williams assisted on nine of the Orange’s first 10 baskets.

Syracuse (4-0) outscored Colgate 42-14 in the paint, 21-0 off turnovers, and 18-4 on the fast break to make the 165th meeting between the upstate New York foes another agonizing day for the Raiders (3-4). The Orange have won 46 straight against Colgate.

UConn 73, Stony Brook 62

In Storrs, Conn., Niels Giffey had a career-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help No. 21 Connecticut rally past Stony Brook.

Shabazz Napier had 15 of his 19 points in the second half for UConn (5-1), and Omar Calhoun added 14.

Dave Coley led Stony Brook (4-2) with 15 points.

Rutgers 87, UNC Greensboro 80

In Greensboro, N.C., Eli Carter scored a season-high 25 points and teammate Myles Mack hit a crucial 3-point basket with less than two minutes remaining as Rutgers fended off UNC Greensboro.

Rutgers (4-1) won its fourth game in a row.

Mack’s 3 gave the Scarlet Knights an 80-73 edge and he followed that with a steal and driving layup.

Clemson 59, Marist 44

In Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Devin Booker had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead Clemson past Marist at the Old Spice Classic.

Adonis Filer scored 10 points and Milton Jennings added nine for Clemson (4-1).

Marist (2-4) got 15 points from Devin Price.

La Salle 77, Villanova 74 (OT)

In Philadelphia, Tyreek Duren scored seven of his 23 points in overtime, including the go-ahead layup with 18.2 seconds left, as La Salle defeated Villanova.

Duren sent the game to overtime with a game-tying 26-foot 3-pointer with six seconds left in regulation.

Rider 74, Milwaukee 60

In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Anthony Myles scored 14 points as Rider beat Milwaukee in the Hoops for Hope Classic.

Myles and Daniel Stewart, who had 11 points, had six rebounds apiece for the Broncos (4-3). Junior Fortunat added 11 points.
