Giants’ Coughlin hoping Phillips’ injury nothing ‘major’

After missing six straight games with a strained MCL in his right knee, Kenny Phillips didn’t make it out of the Giants’ 38-10 victory over the Packers when he aggravated the knee again.

Phillips afterward said he wasn’t worried and he probably could have finished the game if he was needed.

Coach Tom Coughlin said Phillips will need “a couple of days of evaluation’’ before the Giants know the extent of the damage.

“I don’t know what to expect right now,’’ Coughlin said. “He came out of the game because he felt something, but it’s not anything new. Hopefully, he can deal with it and it’s not going to be anything major.’’

* With the loss of Andre Brown (broken left leg), the Giants will look to sign a running back, because they only have two of them on the roster, along with FB Henry Hynoski, a situation Coughlin said would make the position “about as thin as you would make it.”

During the bye week, with Ahmad Bradshaw going for tests on his neck and his foot always a concern, the Giants worked out several running backs with NFL pedigree: Joseph Addai, Mewelde Moore, Ryan Torain and Kregg Lumpkin. A source said Addai is not a fit.

* RT David Diehl was forced out with a neck burner and Coughlin said he hopes Diehl “can play his way through it.’’… LB Jacquain Williams, out the past five games with a knee injury, said he will finally test his physical status when he plans to practice on Thursday.

* Rookie WR Rueben Randle was presented with the football after his first NFL touchdown catch.

“I mean, it’s big but I’m not gonna make a big deal about it,’’ Randle said.

* TE Martellus Bennett while walking through the tunnel following the game caught a male adult fan toppling out of the stands.

“Probably like my fifth person I’ve saved in my life,’’ Bennett said. He said he once saved the life of a ball boy at Texas A&M who was trampled after a basketball game. And then there’s this: “Being black, I had some cousins who can’t swim,’’ he said. “I had to save their lives too a couple times.’’

* The only Giants game that can be “flexed’’ the remainder of the season is the Dec. 30 game against the Eagles, who figure to be eliminated from playoff contention well before then. … Wondering why Coughlin called a timeout with five seconds to go in the first half? He was hoping for a shot at blocking a punt but didn’t realize the Packers picked up a first down. “That was me, it was foolish,’’ Coughlin said. … CB Michael Coe was waived off IR.
