Withey carries Kansas

Jeff Withey had 16 points, 12 rebounds and a school-record 12 blocks for only the second official triple-double in Kansas history, and the 10th-ranked Jayhawks held off a furious comeback by San Jose State for a 70-57 victory last night in Lawrence, Kan.

Withey scored 10 points during a 20-2 run early in the second half, and achieved the Jayhawks’ first triple-double since Cole Aldrich in an NCAA tournament game against Dayton in 2010 when the 7-footer blocked Xavier Jones’ shot with 7:43 left in the game.

Kansas (5-1) used its big run to take a 60-36 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining, but the Spartans (2-3) answered with an 18-2 run to climb back in the game.

Monmouth 65, Lafayette 60

In West Long Branch, N.J., Jesse Steele and Andrew Nicholas scored 18 points apiece and combined to make seven 3-pointers in Monmouth’s victory.

Monmouth (3-4) has won three straight games after a 1-4 start.

Marquette 79, UMBC 46

In Milwaukee, Jamil Wilson netted 15 points in in leading Marquette past Maryland-Baltimore County.

Wilson has shot 14 of 17, or 82.4 percent, in his last two games for the Golden Eagles (5-1). In Marquette’s 72-64 victory over USC on Wednesday, the junior forward had a career-high 19 points.

Tennessee 77, Oakland 50

In Knoxville, Tenn., Jarnell Stokes scored 19 points and went 7-of-8 from the floor as Tennessee relied on suffocating defense to roll over cold-shooting Oakland.
