Wright move … & wrong

* Wow, David Wright re-signed with the Mets for $136 million. I can’t wait to see the Mets in last place for the next five-or-so years. Why didn’t management trade Wright for a few good prospects so that maybe, in a couple of years, the Mets would be in the running?

* Hopefully, the Mets will get more production back from David Wright’s multi-year contract than they got from the similar $100-plus million deals they gave to Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, and Johan Santana.

Yankees economics

* The Steinbrenner family should sell the Yankees now, before they destroy the team, the fan base and their billion-dollar brand. Nobody wants to hear about the Yankees, because they are trying to avoid paying luxury taxes, not going after players in free agency they need to win another championship. George Steinbrenner knew he had to spend money to show the fans no team would beat the Yankees to the best free agents available. He would have laughed at MLB trying to hurt him with this tax. Now, the Steinbrenners and Randy Levine are nothing more than number-crunchers. Their system of charging insane amounts for tickets has left empty seats all around Yankee Stadium. If they stay on their economy plan, the Stadium will go back to drawing only 2.5 million per season, instead of the 4 million that filled the old Stadium under George.

Delusional Jets

* I love the state of delusion that seems to permeate the entire Jets organization. Heading into their last five games of the season, so many on the team keep insinuating they’re better than all of the remaining teams on their schedule because none has a better record than their own 4-7. I think what they fail to realize is that those teams are looking at the Jets as a team they can beat. On the other hand, everybody talks about how tough the Giants’ remaining schedule is. However, how many of those teams are looking forward to playing the Giants?

Where’s the Fireman?

* Now that “Fireman Ed” Anzalone has retired from the Jets as mascot, bully, goon, etc., I can go back to respecting what real firemen stand for. Real firemen are heroes who help people in need and risk their lives doing it. They don’t sit on someone’s shoulders screaming and trying to intimidate fans of rival teams. It’s good to be fan and root, but do it with class — especially if you’re doing it wearing a fireman’s helmet.
