Cantorial classics on Lower East Side

Here’s a way to stir up the warm feelings of Hanukkah — a special performance of classical cantorial music at the Synagogue and Museum at Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side today.

Netanel Hershtik, a 14th-generation cantor, will be singing the near-operatic form, called hazanut.

This concert pays homage to the golden age of cantors of the 1920s and ’30s, and to the liturgical music of modern times.

The 3 p.m. concert at 12 Eldridge St. will present some of the best of cantorial music of the past two centuries.

The composition “From Psalm To Lamentation” will feature Hershtik with the Hampton Synagogue choir and the Amernet quartet, with Alan Mason on piano.

The event is sponsored by Pro Musica Hebraica.

Tickets are still available for adults for $20 and students for $15. VIP seats are priced at $100.

The group was founded eight years ago by Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer and his wife, Robyn.

“To me, it captures the sense of what Jewishness is all about,” said Krauthammer. “One doesn’t have to be religious to feel the power of this music.”
