Midtown Tunnel a drag

Steer clear of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.

The East River tube is the slowest moving of the MTA’s nine crossings, with nearly half of all cars crawling through at less than 25 mph, agency data show.

Nearly 46 percent of motorists inched through the tunnel at under 25 mph from June to September, according to a customer environmental survey the MTA released last week.

The speed limit on most MTA bridges and tunnels is typically 40 mph. It’s sometimes lowered in tunnels to 25 mph when the tubes carry two-way traffic during peak times.

The Midtown tunnel’s snail’s pace reflects gridlock on the surrounding streets in Manhattan, including First and Second avenues and 34th Street, officials said.

The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel fares much better with 90.9 percent of drivers traveling above 25 mph.

The fastest of all the MTA’s major crossings — which don’t include the Rockaways bridges — was the Throgs Neck Bridge, where 97.9 percent of cars cruised through at above 30 mph.

That bridge — as well as the Verrazano — has a 45-mph speed limit.

The Triborough was the slowest of the bridges. Some 15.2 percent of cars crossed at speeds lower than 30 mph, the MTA reported.
