Knicks’ Felton has bone bruise in left thumb

“How does it feel?,’’ Raymond Felton said of his left thumb in the Knicks locker room yesterday. “It’s in pain. It hurts.’’

Felton jammed his thumb in the second half Sunday. He left the locker room after the game in major discomfort and took an MRI exam last night that revealed just a bone bruise/contusion and not anything major such as a break or tear. But the Knicks listed him as day to day, leaving his status unclear for the Knicks’ three-game road trip to Charlotte, Miami and Chicago.

Felton said the pain is coming at the base of his thumb.

For Knicks fans, it would be a shame if Felton missed the rematch with the Heat, considering the psychological ramifications of the showdown and that Jason Kidd (back spasms) will be less than 100 percent. It would also be too bad for Felton to miss his return to Charlotte, where he played five seasons. He’s a North Carolina native and played for the Tar Heels.

Last night, Felton tweeted, “Thanks to everyone for checking on me and yes I will be ok. Just a bone bruise and I’m going to take it one day at a time.’’

Kidd, who has shared the backcourt with Felton, missed his fourth straight game and he too was listed as “day to day.’’

The good money is the Knicks are saving Kidd for Miami. Coach Mike Woodson said he will have to “monitor Kidd’s minutes’ until he’s 100 percent.

Felton still played all but the first 15 seconds of the fourth quarter and finished with 23 points — 10-of-17 from the field — and seven assists in the Knicks’ 106-99 victory over the Suns at the Garden.

“It’s swollen now, in a lot of pain,’’ Felton said before the MRI exam. “We’ll see what happens. It got jammed between another player, just a lot of pain in my thumb.

“If it were up to me, I wouldn’t miss any time. I was able to finish the game with it not wrapped so I should be just fine.’’

* The bizarre season of center Marcus Camby took another turn when he abruptly sat out the game with a sore foot. It’s unclear how he hurt it because Saturday’s practice didn’t include much running and he has played so sparingly.

Camby’s injury could be plantar fasciitis, which is chronic.

* Camby’s absence and Rasheed Wallace’s ejection sprung rookie forward Chris Copeland, who played in the Belgium League last season and made the club out of training camp. Copeland scored eight points on 4 of 5 shooting in 9:38, including a one-handed, putback dunk that excited the crowd.

“That was an amazing feeling and fans erupted and it’s something I’ll remember forever,’’ Copeland said. “Hopefully there’s better moments to come.’’

* Coach Mike Woodson paid a visit Saturday to his mentor, SMU coach Larry Brown, at Hofstra, where the Mustangs routed the Pride, 73-47.

Woodson said he speaks to Brown, a former Knicks coach, all the time. Woodson was joined by assistants Darrell Walker, Jim Todd and Herb Williams. “How ’bout them Knicks,’’ Brown said to open up his press conference.

“He’s doing great,’’ Woodson said. “I don’t know how long he’s going to coach. His team was very sharp, played hard for him [Saturday]. They’re off to a great start – 8-1. He’s doing something right.”

Asked what Brown taught him most, Woodson said, “Preparation, how to prepare for games the right way.’’
