True blue feet of decency: the heart of the NYPD

The Issue: NYPD Officer Larry DePrimo, who bought boots for a homeless man on a cold night last month.

Larry DePrimo, at 25 years young, can teach people of all ages a lesson about humanity, kindness and character (“Still New York’s Finest,” Editorial, Nov. 30).

While many shunned and laughed at this gentleman who was down on his luck, this officer did not. We have become a society so cold and brazen to humiliate this man who was in need.

It is humbling and hopefully a wake-up call for many.

This officer is the young man you hope your daughter will bring home one day.

I still have faith in humanity.

In the two years that DePrimo has served this city as a policeman, he likely subdued several violent, muscular, doped-up criminals.

Every officer has numerous tales that make any scripted cop show seem tame.

When will any of these selfless acts be widely respected?

Seeing DePrimo buy a homeless man new footwear made me weep.

But I am in awe of how the police place life and limb on the line daily to protect us.

Much is said about Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. DePrimo should be a contender.

By his simple act of kindness, he has shown us all what we should be.

It is always easy to pass those who cannot do for themselves and say to ourselves that someone will take care of that person. But this is not always so.

With his act of buying shoes for a homeless man, he has shown us it begins with each and every one of us.

I vote for him as a true man of the year.

Amid all the usual stories of treachery and tragedy, it was heartwarming to read about DePrimo’s caring and generosity.

However, DePrimo had better be careful lest Mayor Bloomberg have his Department of Health inspectors issue him a violation for “clothing the needy without a permit.”

I believe that’s the first candid photo I’ve ever seen that presents cops in a positive light.
