Ed Fountaine’s Stakes Spot Plays

Queens County

Aqueduct, eighth race. Purse: $75,000. 1 1/8 miles, 3-year-olds and up. Post: 3:48 p.m.

LOWDOWN: If you throw out his effort in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, when he tired badly after chasing the pace, San Pablo has won three straight stakes as the heavy favorite by margins of three lengths or more, and he won his only start over the Big A’s main track by four lengths.

SUGAR SWIRL

Gulfstream Park, ninth race. Grade 3. Purse: $100,000. 6 furlongs, fillies and mares. Post: 4:35 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Dust and Diamonds looked like she might post a minor upset in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint until champion Groupie Doll came rolling by in the stretch, but Dust and Diamonds still easily held second. Before that loss, the daughter of Vindication won three straight with authority. Short price better than a long face.

BAYAKOA

Hollywood Park, sixth race. Grade 2. Purse: $200,000. 1 1/16 miles, Cushion track, fillies and mares. Post: 6:04 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Lady of Fifty has the sharpest recent form in this field of eight, coming off a stakes win at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old filly has good tactical speed, won the California Oaks last January by 3 1/4 lengths going this distance, and is 3-for-6, with two thirds, over synthetic surfaces. She also owns a bullet work over this strip.
