Straphangers help prevent a repeat subway tragedy after man tumbles on the tracks

She just couldn’t stand to see any more tragedy in the subway.

A 31-year-old event planner helped prevent a second bloody train tragedy in the subway system this week by quickly organizing a rescue attempt after a drunken man tumbled onto the tracks at the Bowling Green station in Manhattan.

Doreen Winkler cajoled a reluctant Good Samaritan into jumping onto the roadbed to help the fallen man and then got two other women to help her haul the men up.

“There was no time to freak out,” said Winkler. “I had to do it.”

She was motivated to act by memories of the death of Ki Suk Han, who was pushed onto the subway tracks Monday and killed beneath a Q train.

“It has been on my mind every day,” said Winker.

It all began around 10:30 p.m. Thursday while she was waiting for an uptown 5 train.

She heard a loud “thud” and stood up to see that a boozy, 64-year-old man had fallen onto the tracks.

“I’m like, ‘Get up! get up!’ ” she said. “But he’s not getting up.”

The slender, 5-foot-2 Winkler knew she couldn’t drag him up, so she called on a onlooker to jump down. He did so.

And as the train headlights started flickering in the tunnel, Winkler and two petite woman helped lift the men up.
