COLLEGE: Kentucky plummets out of Top 25

Indiana, Duke and Michigan remained the top three teams in the AP college basketball poll, but Kentucky fell out of the Top 25 for the first time since John Calipari became coach.

The Wildcats (4-3) opened the season ranked No. 3, dropped to No. 8 and after back-to-back losses to unranked Notre Dame and Baylor, their 61-poll run ended.

Former UConn coach Jim Calhoun said he had surgery in May to remove an apparent cancerous growth from his lungs.

Utah will honor the legacy of former coach Rick Majerus by hanging a replica of his trademark white sweater from the rafters at the basketball arena. Majerus died Saturday in Los Angeles while awaiting a heart transplant. He was 64.

NBA: Trail Blazers conquer Bobcats in OT

In Charlotte, N.C., LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points and 13 rebounds, Luke Babbitt hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers and the Trail Blazers overcame a 97-79 deficit with 5:17 left in regulation to beat the Bobcats 118-112 in overtime. Ben Gordon set a franchise record with eight 3-pointers for the Bobcats, who dropped their fourth straight.

In Salt Lake City, Blake Griffin scored 30 points and the Clippers handed the Jazz their first loss at home, 105-104.

Lakers guard Steve Blake will undergo surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle and will miss at least six weeks.

ETC.: Red Bulls acquire pair of veterans

The Red Bulls acquired veterans Fabían Espíndola and Jámison Olave from Real Salt Lake in exchange for an undisclosed amount of allocation money. The 27-year-old Espindola was an MLS All-Star in 2012. The 31-year-old Olave was 2010 MLS Defender of the Year.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen, a Dutch man working as a linesman during his son’s youth soccer match, was beaten and kicked by several players from the opposing team after the game and died the next day. Three players, whose ages range from 15 to 16, were arrested for alleged involvement in the beating Sunday.

Former Ryder Cup player Ross Fisher of England easily finished among the top 25 in the final Q-school to earn a PGA Tour card. D.H. Lee of South Korea won, giving him the highest priority ranking for next year. Erik Compton, who has gone through two heart transplants, made it back to the tour by tying for seventh.
